How Blockchain Chain Analysis Works and How to Counter It
Chain analysis is the primary tool law enforcement uses to trace cryptocurrency transactions on the darknet. Understanding how it works helps you make informed decisions about financial privacy.
How Chain Analysis Companies Operate
Companies like Chainalysis maintain massive databases linking Bitcoin addresses to real-world entities. They analyze transaction patterns, timing, amounts, and known addresses (exchanges, darknet services, seized wallets) to build a graph of money flow. They sell this intelligence to law enforcement, banks, and exchanges.
Heuristics Used
Common input ownership (addresses used in the same transaction likely belong to the same entity), change address detection, timing analysis, amount correlation, and dust attacks (sending tiny amounts to addresses to link them when they're later spent together).
Countermeasures
Use Monero for transactions requiring privacy. If using Bitcoin: never reuse addresses, avoid consolidating UTXOs, use CoinJoin implementations, delay transactions randomly, use different amounts than the purchase price. The most effective method remains converting to Monero via atomic swaps.
