Ledger
Ledger uses a secure element chip (ST33) with proprietary firmware (BOLOS). The closed-source nature means you trust Ledger's security claims without independent verification. In 2020, Ledger's customer database was breached, exposing names and addresses of 272,000 customers. The hardware is solid; the company's data practices are a concern.
Trezor
Trezor is fully open-source (hardware and firmware). The Trezor Model T uses a general-purpose chip without a secure element, which means physical attacks are theoretically easier. However, the open-source nature allows independent security audits. Trezor never collects customer data.
