Privacy Coins Beyond Monero: Zcash, Dash, and Pirate Chain
While Monero leads the privacy coin space, several other cryptocurrencies offer varying degrees of transaction privacy. Understanding their differences helps you choose the right tool.
Zcash (ZEC)
Zcash uses zk-SNARKs (zero-knowledge proofs) for optional shielded transactions. The keyword is 'optional' — transparent transactions are the default, and most Zcash transactions are not shielded. This means the anonymity set is small compared to Monero where privacy is mandatory.
Pirate Chain (ARRR)
Pirate Chain uses the same zk-SNARKs technology as Zcash but makes shielded transactions mandatory. All transactions are private by default. The anonymity set is the entire blockchain. Downsides: smaller adoption, fewer exchanges, and a much smaller development community.
The Verdict
Monero remains the best choice for darknet privacy: mandatory privacy, large anonymity set, active development, widespread acceptance, and battle-tested cryptography. Alternative privacy coins have merits but lack Monero's ecosystem and proven track record.
