Planning Your Darknet Exit Strategy
Whether retiring from darknet activities or transitioning to different operations, a planned exit is far safer than an abrupt one. Leaving a clean trail requires deliberate action.
Financial Wind-Down
Convert all marketplace balances to Monero through atomic swaps. Let transaction history age — recent activity attracts more attention than old. Don't consolidate all funds at once (creates a pattern). Gradually move funds over weeks. Use multiple non-KYC off-ramps if converting to fiat.
Identity Cleanup
Delete marketplace accounts where possible. Revoke PGP keys with a revocation certificate. Don't simply stop logging in — some forums display last-seen times. Post a final message if appropriate to prevent impersonation. Change passwords to random strings before deletion to prevent future access if databases leak.
Physical Cleanup
Securely wipe (DBAN or nwipe) all drives that contained darknet-related data. Physically destroy USB drives and SD cards used with Tails. Remove or destroy any written notes (addresses, passwords, seeds that are no longer needed). Factory reset any phones that had Tor Browser or related apps.
