I2P Network: The Invisible Internet Project Explained

While Tor dominates the anonymity network space, I2P (Invisible Internet Project) offers a fundamentally different approach to anonymous communication that's worth understanding.

How I2P Differs from Tor

Tor uses a circuit-based system designed primarily for anonymous access to the clearnet. I2P uses a packet-based system optimized for internal services (eepsites). I2P's garlic routing bundles multiple messages together, making traffic analysis harder. Every I2P user is also a relay, creating a more decentralized network.

I2P Services

I2P hosts its own ecosystem of services: eepsites (websites), I2P-Bote (serverless encrypted email), I2PSnark (anonymous torrenting), and anonymous IRC. The network is smaller than Tor but growing. Some services are unique to I2P and not available elsewhere.

When to Use I2P

Use I2P for: accessing I2P-only services, internal communication within the network, and as an additional layer when Tor is insufficient. Use Tor for: accessing clearnet sites anonymously and .onion services. They complement each other rather than compete.
