Password Management for Darknet Users: Best Practices

Using unique, strong passwords for every darknet account is essential. One compromised password can unravel your entire online identity if reused across services.

KeePassXC

KeePassXC is the recommended offline password manager. It stores all passwords in an encrypted database file (AES-256 or ChaCha20). The database can be unlocked with a master password, key file, or hardware token. No cloud sync, no internet connection needed — your passwords never leave your device.

Diceware Passphrases

For master passwords and encryption passphrases, use Diceware — a method of generating passphrases by rolling dice and looking up words in a list. A 6-word Diceware passphrase provides approximately 77 bits of entropy and is much easier to remember than random characters. Example: correct-horse-battery-staple-winter-campus.

Backup Strategy

Back up your KeePassXC database to an encrypted USB drive stored in a separate physical location. If using Tails with persistent storage, your database is automatically encrypted. Never store your password database unencrypted or in cloud storage.
