Tails OS: Complete Setup Guide for Anonymous Browsing

Tails (The Amnesic Incognito Live System) is a portable Linux distribution designed to protect your privacy and anonymity. It routes all traffic through Tor and leaves no trace on the host computer after shutdown.

Why Tails?

Unlike using Tor Browser on your regular OS, Tails ensures that ALL network traffic goes through Tor — not just browser traffic. It also prevents any data from being written to the hard drive, running entirely in RAM. When you shut down, everything is wiped.

Installation

Download Tails from the official site (tails.net) and verify the download using the provided PGP signature. Flash it to a USB drive (minimum 8GB) using Etcher or dd. Boot from the USB by changing your BIOS boot order. The setup wizard will guide you through initial configuration.

Persistent Storage

Tails offers encrypted persistent storage on the USB drive for data you need to keep between sessions — PGP keys, passwords, bookmarks. Enable only what you need. The persistent storage is encrypted with LUKS and requires a passphrase at each boot.

Important Limitations

Tails cannot protect against hardware keyloggers, compromised firmware, or cold boot attacks. Don't use Tails on a computer you don't trust physically. Keep the USB drive secure and destroy it if compromised.
