Wi-Fi Security Risks for Anonymous Browsing

Your Wi-Fi connection is the first link in your chain of anonymity. Even with Tor, Wi-Fi level information can identify your device and location.

MAC Address Tracking

Your device's MAC address is broadcast to every Wi-Fi network you probe or connect to. Retail stores, airports, and cities increasingly deploy Wi-Fi tracking to monitor foot traffic. Even without connecting, your device's probe requests can be captured. Spoof your MAC address before every connection: macchanger -r wlan0 on Linux, or enable MAC randomization in your OS settings.

Captive Portal Risks

Public Wi-Fi captive portals (hotel, cafe login pages) can: inject JavaScript into unencrypted traffic, log your device information, require identifying information (email, room number), and intercept DNS queries. Never authenticate to captive portals from the same device you use for anonymous activities.

Safe Wi-Fi Practices

Use a dedicated Wi-Fi adapter that you only connect for anonymous activities. Randomize MAC on every connection. Prefer open networks without captive portals. Use mobile data with a prepaid SIM purchased with cash as an alternative. Never connect to your home or work Wi-Fi for anonymous activities.
